The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun investigating a new wave of an outbreak caused by Cyclospora, a single-celled parasite. Seventy-two new cases have been identified, marking the sixth outbreak investigation opened in 2024. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 11,500 cases have been reported across 41 states this year, with 4,173 classified as confirmed and over 7,400 as probable.
The number of cases recorded in July alone far exceeds the typical annual range of 2,000 to 5,000 cases. Michigan alone has recorded 7,664 cases and 106 hospitalizations. The outbreak has been linked to shredded romaine lettuce produced in Mexico and distributed by Taylor Farms. This lettuce was served at some restaurants in the Taco Bell chain.
To date, 308 hospitalizations have been reported, but no deaths have been recorded. In public statements regarding the outbreak, health officials stated that the situation is "under control."
